Tessa 45 Report post Posted April 8, 2010 To be a proofreader you need to have a good English level. You need to observe grammar or spelling mistakes that the translator might have missed while concentrating on the translation, and overall to make the text flow well. You also need to inform us (-> the Translator) if you find any missing translations by making a thread in the Help Section -> Missing Translations Request -> J/C/K raws. If you want to apply for this job, please be dedicated, and if it's possible, fast. Editors can't work on the translations if they are not proofread. Don't forget to proofread your own application post. I'm serious. Please leave a reply here, or send a private message to Melita_H AND x5ga. After you've applied, one of us will send you a test. If you have problems posting on this forum or sending private messages, please check that you have validated your account first. If your profile says "Group: Validating" you will not be able to post or send messages until you have activated your account via email.Edit: We're only accepting GODLIKE Proofreaders. You'll have to be godlike and stuff. Edit 2: Closed for now because we have so many new and fast ones. Thanks to all of you who've applied~ :3 Edit 3: Opened again because <reasons> Edit 4: Closed because OMG so many proofreaders. Edit 5: Opened. For now. Edit 6: Closed again, thank you to all the applicants! Edit 7: Opened again...whee and stuff. Edit 8: Closed again...done for now. Edit 9: The head proofreaders are busy at the moment, so proofreader recruitment will be reopened in the first week of November (2013). Edit 10: Umm...actually as it turns out we don't really need any more proofreaders at the moment, so...sorry about that...we will reopen recruitment eventually though. Edit 11: Opened again. Edit 12: and closed. Edit 13: Open again. Special limited time offer! -this message brought to you by x5ga- All applicants, please be sure to look at and heed the instructions and advice provided by the following posts in this thread: x5ga's post from August 29, 2012 (mostly applicable for all time); Lat's post from October 26, 2012; x5ga's post from October 26, 2012; Tear's post from December 2, 2012; Melita_H's post from July 21, 2013; November Rose's post from July 21, 2013; Melita_H's post from July 15, 2014 (which says the mostly same things as this paragraph, but with the addition of a fun and informative video 8D); and, of course, this post you're reading right now (since it has the application instructions and all). -this portion of this message brought to you by Melita_H-
Ani 26 Report post Posted March 19, 2011 Um, hi. :] I was wondering if you guys were still recruiting for proofreaders. If so, I'd like to apply. I have experience in this position. Currently, I am working with Shoujo Addiction, Shoujo Crusade, and Onigiri Gakuen. If there's a test, I'd like to take it. ^^

Nanodesu 4 Report post Posted August 30, 2011 Hi, (sorry about the cheesy introduction), I'm new to this site (just joined a couple of hours ago); however I'd like to apply for the position of proofreader. Whilst I have virtually no experience in proofreading scanlations (I get the feeling I'm not really helping myself out by saying that), I'm very enthusiastic and good at working towards deadlines. English is my first language and I am a total grammar freak - I even make sure to properly punctuate my text messages (which sounds even more pathetic now that I've typed it into my reply). I can get through manga chapters pretty quickly (approximately 110 per day, unless I'm busy doing something else like watching anime); however I can't use photoshop to save my life (sorry about that). So yeah, if you don't mind, please send me the proofreading test whenever you can. P.S: For the record, I don't usually type in such a formal tone: it's just that you said, to be a proofreader, we need to have a good level of English and thoroughly proofread our responses. So, as you can see, I ended up getting a little bit carried away... P.P.S: Love the Puella Magi Madoka Magica Avatar...Tomoe Mami's pretty cool; though she's got nothing on Kyouko. CookieMonsterHana 26 Report post Posted March 18, 2012 Hello, hello! I'd like to join as a proofreader~ Sadly, I don't have any other experience as a proofreader ( though I have tried applying for a position before ). English is, of course, my first language, and my grammar is pretty good (:

Melita_H 53 Report post Posted March 24, 2012 (edited) Greetings! Well, I have been reading your releases for quite a long while, but I have not yet had a chance to try to help out. I am definitely interested in proofreading. I would offer to try my hand at a position that you all are in more dire need of, but my Japanese is nowhere remotely near good enough to translate, so translating is out, and I don't have photoshop or any comparable program, so unfortunately editing and qc-ing are out also. I have no experience proofreading manga, but I am a somewhat obsessive grammar nerd. I've proofread a number of my friends' school papers and whatnot, I proofread the book that my dad wrote (he's kind of a historian, so he wrote a book on local history...unfortunately his spelling and grammar are, um, not very good...I got my English skills from my mom's side of the family, apparently), and I proofread for the second edition of my college music theory teacher's book (brilliant guy, doctorate, degrees in physics and music, but somehow the textbook that he wrote for his students was overrun with spelling and grammar errors...I suppose it was fine for some others, but for me, I couldn't pay attention to the content very well because I was so busy correcting the spelling and grammar errors in my head...). I've also proofread or just corrected an assortment of random other things, such as employee manuals and brochures and the like for the resort at which I used to work. Basically, as I said, I'm just a massive grammar nerd. Anyway, I am just now acquiring some free time, so I thought that, rather than just spending that time reading, I should try to be a bit useful as well. So, if you are still in need of proofreaders, and if I meet your qualifications, I would be very happy to work with you all. Um, also, just as with Soul up there, I thank you for your time and everything, and I apologize that my post is so long... Have good days! I hope to hear from you soon! Um, I use this just because I am also a music nerd...I've played flute for 18 years, and it is infrequent that I see an emoticon with a flute in it, so I got all excited and had to use it right now even though it doesn't relate to this post in any way... kisekikumo 4 Report post Posted October 24, 2012 (edited) Could I also apply? I don't have any experience working in a scanlation group, so this is where I hope to start. I don't have the skills to apply for any other position on offer, so I want to help out with proofreading as English is my native language and I also help to tutor it. Please send me a test! ~kisekikumo Edited October 24, 2012 by Melita_H Test sent~
lat 62 Report post Posted October 26, 2012 (edited) good luck everyone Yeah PRing is hard ^^ [/b] I wish we had time to train PRers >.< But if this helps: to be a great PRer check spelling, grammar and flow of the text thoroughly - go over it several times if you have to! XD Check for missing TL and that the translations match the bubbles/text on the raw. That's really the main basis of PRing, I'm not sure how much more a real PRer could tell you.. :S Edited October 26, 2012 by x5ga don't tell the secretâ„¢
x5ga 9082 Report post Posted October 26, 2012 Other Tips: - read the phrase out aloud. does it sound weird? awkward? improper? something that nobody would word that way? If yes, then reword it to something that is acceptable. Having perfect grammar is just the first step -- the script has to sound natural too. - the script is horrible and should be heavily modified. it's horrrrrrible. think of the worst thing you saw. the script is even more worse. - feel free to make substantial changes to the ungodly script. as long as it means the same thing, for all I care, you could replace everything (as long as it sounds good). - we have a few hard-to-fix phrases that we check, which, if fixed properly, would make you pass the test even if some other parts of the script are not perfect (hint: one of them is "Miss Akiranashi's special [...]"). - yes, the test is extremely hard and our standards are quite high. So if you do not pass the first time, try again after 10 business daysâ„¢. - if you pass, we'll probably throw a party and get dead drunk and stuff. - even tho it looks like nobody in the thread passed as of lately, 2 persons actually did. that's all that I can think of at the moment. elle.bear 31 Report post Posted December 6, 2012 (edited) Hi (: I would like to try the proofreader test. I owe a lot to Evil Flowers for all of your epic scans and I want to return the favour favor. hehehe. I first learned American English but was "forced" to relearn all my spelling when we moved to Australia. Colour not color. Who cares? I hope that doesn't become a complication/hindrance/nuisance. Thank you. PS. I am currently on Christmas/Winter Summer break for the next 6 weeks, so I would love to help out. November Rose 18 Report post Posted July 21, 2013 Hahahahaha... And don't forget, it can save lives too! "Let's eat grandpa!" "Let's eat, grandpa!" I would also advise future applicants to take a look at this before they post or take the test: Ten Words You Need to Stop Misspelling You may also want to look at these: How to Use a Semicolon and How to Use an Apostrophe If you already know the information presented in these links, then kudos for you. If you don't... well, you learn something new everyday, and let's hope that it was just one or two things you didn't know. If you didn't know around 70% of what is presented in these links, then you will need lady luck on your side. In addition, you can take this quiz for fun: The Twitter Spelling Test Quiz If you get anything less than 80%, then you will most likely fail our test. So, if you were to take this quiz, get less than an 80% the first go round (taking it again will not help), then consider it an automatic fail.
