Cons? Any that you attend?

Katsucon is happening this weekend near Washington DC (East Coast, United States of America...) Are any folks attending? I don't cosplay, but the kids enjoy dressing up and I enjoy seeing the work that others put into their costumes, especially for the mass photo shoots.

So, if you attend, which ones and where?

Do you cosplay of enter AMV or other competitions?

What do you enjoy about cons?

Comicon is one I'd like to go to someday. It's a haul for me, but someday... I've been clean of WOW for a few years now, so going to Blizzcon would be tantamount to falling off the wagon for me. Still, I love the pictures from both cons and would love to see some of the costumes.

Comicon generates actual news (like the release of the Avatar trailer a few years ago) and it would be a lot of fun to go to panels with the heavyweights in the comic industry. Their artist alley must be... whoa!

If you could jump in the wayback machine you'd see me waving from my first con. It was a Trekkie thing and I was dressed in some goofy medieval thing, only all messed up. Yeah. I think I still have some of the odd badges from that... I usually enjoy stories and comics that poke fun of cons, so I'll check this one out. Thanks for the tip! (I swear- that old, crossdressing school girl's at EVERY con! And, while my legs are also unshaved, it's not me!)

I've been dragging my kids to them off and on for a few years now. The first year I took them, my (then) five or six year old daughter's eyes bulged out at the sight of all the people in costumes (some quite grand) and I told her "You don't have to stop playing dress up when you grow up." A woman in costume turned to me and said that she wished someone had told her that when she was a kid.

I think they get a lot out of planning their costumes and being around so many excited and interesting people. ArtFight's a big hit with them as well. It's crazy, free form and the jokes can get quite... adult, but it's the concept that art can be fun and social which seems to get through. We take in panels now and then, but they mainly like to people watch and shop the dealer's rooms and artist alley.

I really liked "Japan Day". There were lots of events, food, music, martial arts performances, manga and at the end even a pretty firework. And there was a booth where they dressed you in a Yukata (for money of course but still nice). I tried it out.~ Though, it was pretty hard to breath while having that on. o.O

Sorry it's been since March, but I just checked back on this thread. Do you have a picture of you all dressed out? There's an active Japan-America Society near where I live and I wonder if they've thought of doing this. There are a lot of vendors that sell kimono and yukata, but I don't know of anyone who dresses folks out for $$. Otakon and Katsucon usually have a seminar in how to wear traditional clothes. Really cool couple did it last year at Otakon, anyway. Many layers, but they also showed us the falsies and shortcuts that folks use to get the traditional look. Didn't take notes, but I enjoyed the transition they went through onstage.

We had something like Japan Day here, only in was called Michi Biraki - Open road, it was kind of a replica of the authentic festival from Japan.

And they had booths for dressing up people in Yukata and other, but not for money.

Anyway, this is what they gave me: :)

I've been to Katsucon, Otakon, Zenkaikon and AnimeNext.

I like going to conventions because it's a nice place to make friends, especially at more local cons. Also it's so much fun to look at all the cosplaying and it's such a great atmosphere (in general and (-) minus the smells.).

I don't cosplay though... oni1/>

hmm.. in my country i've attended cons such as: Anime Festival Asia, Hellofest, Toycon, Comic Con, all for the sake of buying fan arts, cute and unique souvenirs, and see cosplayers. i'm not a cosplayer, but i admire those who come as cosplayers, though i must say, some kind of put up a half done attire, and show up anyway. i saw a few girls wearing goth loli costumes, but i think their shoes weren't done, so they decided to wear a fluffy pink animal shoes. amy friend who owns a few goth loli clothings felt pissed off at them for ruining the look. there were also more misses than hits in the cosplayers a few years back. nowadays, people tend to dress as shingeki no kyojin charas or free! charas.

i wish i can attend SDCC comic con or yaoi con, but i live so far away, and getting america's visa is quite hard (especially if you dont answer right in the interview.. -_-)

I just go to local cons, or just cons in close states. I've been to: Nashicon (2 or 3 times), Banzaicon (2 times), Animazement, and Ichibancon. My friends and I have started doing panels, so we go to them to basically entertain the other con goers. If you've been to one con, you've been to them all.

I don't think mines is considered a con, but it's still a convention except the name was Anime Matsuri. It was created by Houston, Texas (my home town :D...still live just a bit further away). I went it last year for the first time in my entire life, it was pretty fun actually. It last like 2 days and a half, night time are usually the wildest and craziest time (Rated M). Of course, I didn't stay that long, I only went on Saturday for like couple of hours. I got the kids Pass oni48 even though I was already 18. Saves money, since i look really young ( some same I look 12, others say 15, but many say even younger than 12). I didn't really dress up  at all, but I get to see a lobster (idk, it was some person dressed up like about 6~7ft tall lobster, obviously the person must have been around 5'7 or something). But yeah, there were celebs and everything.

This year, i'm going again. It's around spring break of March. Hopefully, I dress up for this time, if not...then it's fine. oni49 What I know so far that are going to be there is, Aya Ikeda (from Pretty Cure) and there was another Japanese person, I didn't recall  and some other fashion/cosplayers.

This year has been the most hectic year for me in terms of cons.

I started the year by going to Anime Zap (like the first weekend of Jan)

Then I went to Anime Matsuri in March (because Reika was going to be there!!!)

ACEN was next, I started going since 2008 or 09, I forgot

Future cons:

Anime Midwest July 4-6 (it's right here, so why not?)
OtaKon Aug. 8-10 (brother wants to go and who am I to say no to a con haha)
Yaoi-con Sept. 12-14 (been going since I turned 18, which isn't that long ago but yeah, PLUS Reika will be there this year <3 It's like heaven <3)
RamenCon Sept. 19-21(to go see Tatum!! I've been wanting to see that man since forever! lol)
EXPO TNT 28 Oct 16-19? (Reika....<3 <3 that's my only explanation haha)

I really want to go to Comic Con, Anime Expo, and those big CA cons, For sure I'll be going to Anime Matsuri next year <3

Aww, I wish I could go to all those huge cons. Reika's cosplays are amazing. I want to see them in person eventually (sometime soon), but California and Texas are both too far. ;_;
